Ingredients

French Toast
  • 8 slices thick-cut bread such as brioche, challah, or Texas toast
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter plus more as needed for the pan
For Serving
  • 1 powdered sugar for dusting
  • 1 maple syrup for serving

Equipment

  • 1 large shallow bowl or baking dish for the custard
  • 1 whisk
  • 1 large nonstick skillet or griddle
  • 1 spatula for flipping

Method

Prepare the Custard
  1. Whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt in a wide shallow bowl or baking dish until smooth and fully combined.
Cook the French Toast
  1. Heat a large nonstick skillet or griddle over medium heat and add a little butter to coat the surface.
  2. Dip 1 to 2 slices of bread into the custard, soaking for a few seconds per side until coated but not soggy.
  3. Place the soaked bread on the hot skillet and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, until the first side is golden brown.
  4. Flip the slices and cook for 2 to 3 minutes more, until the second side is browned and the center is set.
  5. Repeat with the remaining bread, adding more butter to the skillet as needed between batches.
Serve
  1. Serve warm topped with butter, powdered sugar, and maple syrup.

Notes

Use thick, slightly stale bread for the best texture. Cook over medium heat so the center sets before the outside gets too dark. Keep finished slices warm in a low oven if cooking in batches. Nutrition is an estimate and does not include optional toppings in full amounts.
