Ingredients

Salad
  • 4 medium cucumbers peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 medium white onion thinly sliced
Vinegar Dressing
  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Equipment

  • 1 cutting board
  • 1 chef's knife
  • 1 mixing bowl large
  • 1 small bowl or measuring cup for whisking dressing
  • 1 whisk
  • 1 serving dish or storage container glass preferred

Method

Prepare the vegetables
  1. Peel the cucumbers and slice them into thin, even rounds.
  2. Thinly slice the white onion into slivers.
  3. Place the sliced cucumbers and onions in a large bowl or glass dish.
Make the dressing and chill
  1. In a small bowl or large measuring cup, whisk together the white vinegar, water, granulated sugar, salt, and black pepper until the sugar is mostly dissolved.
  2. Pour the vinegar dressing over the cucumbers and onions and toss gently to coat.
  3. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving, or up to 2 hours for stronger flavor.
  4. Stir gently before serving and serve cold.

Notes

Slice the cucumbers evenly for the best texture. White vinegar gives the most classic flavor, but apple cider vinegar can be used for a milder variation. Store covered in the refrigerator and serve chilled.
